Minimum Qualifications and Expectations of Students Entering Program:
Eligible applicants for the Hospital Police Officer position:
- must be at least 21 years-old
- have no felony convictions
- have a High School Diploma or GED
- be a U.S. citizen or have applied for citizenship
- possess a California Driver’s License
How to Apply:
Department of State Hospitals – Atascadero and Allan Hancock College offer a 40-hour POST (Peace Officer Standards & Training) certified, Penal Code 832 Arrest course. Students can attend classes at Allan Hancock College or Department of State Hospitals – Atascadero. Completion of this course meets the minimum training requirement to apply for the Hospital Police Officer position at the Department of State Hospitals.
Applicants for the position of Hospital Police Officer are given a pass/fail general law enforcement written examination. Applicants who pass the written examination are scheduled for an oral interview. Successful applicants are then scheduled for an extensive Peace Officer background investigation and psychological screening. Applicants must be 21 years of age and have no felony convictions.
Training Program Details:
When a Hospital Police Officer is hired, he or she attends two weeks of new employee hospital orientation. He or she receives eight weeks of training in the Department of State Hospitals – Atascadero, Forensic Law Enforcement Academy on grounds. The person receives an additional eight weeks of on-the-job training with a Field Training Officer. The 13-week Forensic Law Enforcement Academy is endorsed by Allan Hancock College for college credit.
