DSH - Napa: About the Area

Founded in 1875, Department of State Hospitals - Napa is the only state hospital for persons with mental disabilities in Northern California, serving a catchment area of nearly 13 million. Located at the entrance of the Napa Wine Country, the hospital is convenient to San Francisco and Marin County attractions, as well as the high Sierras.

The scenic Mendocino coast, with its quaint inns and unique galleries, is less than a three-hour drive to the west. Boating on San Francisco Bay and around the villages of Tiburon, Belvedere and Sausalito is a popular year-round sport. The vintner's art has made its California home in the Napa Valley, attracting many fine restaurants to the area.

Although located adjacent to metropolitan areas, the Napa Valley offers a quiet, sweeping vista of vineyards and haze-capped hills. The pace is slow, offering peace and tranquility in a moderate climate. Fine schools and a sense of community round out this Northern California location.
