DSH-Metropolitan Clinical Psychology Doctoral Internship: Application Process

The DSH-Metropolitan Doctoral Internship Program is a member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) and our intern positions are selected through the APPIC match. Applications are managed through the AAPI Online service and further information about the matching process can be found at APPIC Match.

Step 1   Complete the APPIC Application for Psychology Internships (AAPI) online via the Applicant Portal, including the three letters of recommendation.

Step 2   Select "Metropolitan State Hospital" as a Designated Site on the APPIC Applicant Portal. You may also find our site by filtering by our Program Code – enter either 114411 for the General Track or 114412 for the Neuropsychology Track. (You may be able to find our site by entering 1144, as well.)

Step 3   The most qualified applicants will be invited for an individual interview. All interviews will be conducted virtually.

Step 4   Applicants selected for interview must complete the Clinical Psychology Intern Exam by clicking here. (Do not be concerned about the "Upcoming Filing Cutoff Dates" shown on that page.) You will be prompted to create a CalCareer account if you do not have one.

You will submit this exam online - no need to mail or e-mail another copy. This step must be completed prior to the interview.

Step 5   Applicants selected for interview must also complete the State of California application for the Clinical Psychology Intern position by clicking here. This will take you to a page that says, "Can I apply for this job?" If you have completed Step 4, click "I have eligibility," followed by "Apply For This Job."

You will submit this application online - no need to mail or e-mail another copy. This step must be completed prior to the interview.

Step 6   After interviews are completed, applicants submit their internship rankings to National Matching Services. Applicants should rank the General Track and the Neuropsychology Track separately.

Step 7   Although the match occurs in February, actual employment is contingent on passing a physical examination (including a drug screening) and a security clearance following fingerprinting (LiveScan) prior to the internship start date.
